Did you know that throwing your food scraps in the trash contributes to global warming? When your trash goes into landfills, the organic waste stuck inside without oxygen starts to decompose through the process of anaerobic decomposition. This generates methane gas, which is then released into our atmosphere. It is hard to believe, but our failure to properly dispose of organic waste could generate a greenhouse gas 20 times more potent than carbon dioxide.
There is a way to reduce the impact of our organic waste on the environment: Composting.
Compost is organic material that can be added to the soil to help plants grow. 🌱 If you don't have a garden, you can still compost and help those in the community who need it. You can make use of your food scraps to help local agriculture for example. Organizations like TAIS PR can pick it up and turn it into compost for distribution to local farmers. ♻️ What a way to give back to Mother Earth!
One of Alchemy's goals is to create conversations around ways to improve our quality of life and our relationship with our planet.
This Monday, May 10th at 1pm we will be joining several community leaders from: wellness and yoga studio Sacred Lotus Luquillo, compost producer TAIS and community garden Alacena Feminista Luquillo to talk about the benefits of composting and how we can start this practice in our homes and community. This will be an informational session via Facebook Live hosted by Sacred Lotus, through which you will learn what exactly is composting, how it helps our communities, and how you can contribute!
More info to come. ✨ Make sure you follow us on Facebook to keep up with the latest news and more details.
